Fall, 2007 Diary Entry

Howdy. It's been too long since my last note from here in Big Sky Country. We have had a really busy year so far. Summer was hot and dry, but we made it through. In July, we had a lightning-caused fire on our summer cattle range, but thankfully it was short lived due to the hard work of the rangeland fire fighters and a couple of huge helicopters.

We are currently in the process of weaning the calves from their mothers. They will be here, on the fields around home, for the next 45 days before they go to their new home in South Dakota. They are in good shape, and the prices are strong again this year.

We have been getting snow since the last week in September. The moisture is needed, and we are very happy about that. The wild animals on our ranch are in great shape and should have an easy time going into winter. Just today, I saw about a dozen wild Bighorn Sheep, some Antelope, and a big herd of Elk; they all look great.

Speaking of September, I was away from the ranch for almost a full month on a trip to Germany, Belgium, and a short stint in the Netherlands. I was chosen for a fellowship for the American Council on Germany to represent American Agriculture. Three other fellows and I toured about 30 farms, factories, and bio energy facilities as well as attending meetings with the German Parliament and the European Union.

While there, we further built relations with our trading partners across the Atlantic. It was the trip of a lifetime, and also very nice to share ideas with and gain knowledge from our European counterparts.

I must run for now, but I want to leave you with this: As the school year gets underway, I wish each of you the best one yet. I am looking very forward to sharing my day to day life with each of you.

Einen großen Tag haben! (Have a Great Day)
